Dear Sowers Family and Friends,

My name is Kelley Highsmith. I am the one who carelessly drank and drove into your loved ones path on April 7th 2002. I am writing this letter to apologize for what I've done.

I'm finding it hard to express my feelings in words, but I will do the best I can. Please know that I didn't mean for any of this to happen. I never thought my actions could affect so many people in such a negative way. Not only did my actions change my life in ways unimaginable, it changed yours as well. I realize you are now without a husband, a father and a friend and it's all my fault.

There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of and pray for your hearts to be healed. I also pray that "God's will" will be done in my life for that awful decision that I made to drink and drive.

I sometimes wonder why God choose me to be alive; I was the one in the wrong. I often wish that I was the one to have died. My family, friends and church try to help me through those feelings, but when they come they truly take over my heart. My heart hurts when I think of what you're going through.

I have not drank alcohol since April 7, 2002 and I will never consume alcohol again. It is my desire to share with others my involvement in this tragedy, its consequences and impact to anyone who will listen. I pray that by communicating the horror of this experience that maybe others, including my daughters ages 9 and 13, will choose not to drink and drive, and maybe through this communication other lives can be saved and the suffering of future victims prevented.
